Karen & Christa: Living Our Cause

May 4, 2015, 13:43 PM by

The winners of this month's Living Our Cause Award are Karen Sherman and Christa Schillo. While they have very different jobs, both Y staff members have made their marks on our staff, members and program participants by going above and beyond. Learn more about these ladies:

Name: Karen Sherman

Karen Sherman, director of membership- training/operations, is the captain of the ship that is the front desk. She's the one who trains our membership team members, and she's the one who ensures everything runs smoothly when you check in, when you register for a program or when you sign up for a membership. But the thing that makes the most impact is Karen's attention to and support of our members and staff. She makes a difference in people's daily lives, and she goes out of her way to show appreciation for her staff.

How long have you worked for the Y? 8 years.

My hobbies: Reading, gardening, hiking.

Favorite band: The Beatles.

Favorite sports team: University of Dayton.

I work for the Y because… I enjoy the people: staff, members and their children. I also like working for an organization that does so much for the community.

The most fun part about my job is… the children! And the front desk staff with their great senses of humor.

The most meaningful part of my job is… knowing we make a difference in the lives of our families and our community.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned while working at the Y is… that everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue a healthy lifestyle and all children are welcome into our programs, regardless of their personal circumstances.

Name: Christa Schillo

Christa Schillo leads the school-age programs at High Peaks/BCSIS in Boulder, and she oversees her staff and the kids with a blend of bright energy and straightforward humor. The kids in her program know the core values of the Y backward and forward, and they've learned the importance of kindness, safety and fun. She creates a community within her program, and the kids there truly feel at home. Christa has also led highly successful fundraising campaigns for the Y's Community Support Campaign.

How long have you worked for the Y? 3 years, 5 months.

Favorite movie? "Pee Wee's Big Adventure."

Favorite band? The Grateful Dead, Phish or Ween.

I would love to travel to… Japan, or the moon.

I work for the Y because… I want to serve my community and leave a positive impact.

The most fun part about my job is… interacting with the kids and families.

The most meaningful part of my job is… teaching the children how to be safe and respectful in all aspects of their life.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned while working at the Y is… how to create and design a successful fundraiser.
