Ellen & Jamie: Living Our Cause

Jun 30, 2015, 10:51 AM by

Come summer, the Y is a feast for the sun-seeker. Families — hauling coolers, towels, overflowing bags, noodles and all types of pool paraphernalia — flock to the Arapahoe Y. Fun is their priority. But for our aquatics staff, safety is paramount and the member experience follows that closely. We want our members to feel completely safe and satisfied, so they can spend time with their family and enjoy the summer season. While you are basking in the sun or splashing in the deep end, our aquatics staff members work diligently.

These two women make that happen. Jamie Pocock is the Sr. Aquatics Director and Ellen Goettsch is an aquatics certifications instructor, Lifeguard and swim instructor. Together, they are a part of our safety net for you and your family.

Name: Ellen Goettsch

Ellen plays numerous roles in the aquatics department, including teaching and certifying many of our Lifeguards and staff. She works selflessly to train our staff, helping with projects like the bubble takedown and creating a fun, safe environment at the Y. Her commitment and dedication to the aquatics department is second to none.

How long have you worked for the Y? I've worked for the Y since 2002 and YMCA of Boulder Valley since 2011.

I work for the Y because… I enjoy being apart of a community and the Y offers a great community.

Favorite color: Red but I'm looking for a new favorite color.

The most fun part about my job is… Opening the Y every morning and getting to hang with the morning crew. Opening shift is the best!

Favorite restaurant: Upslope Brewing.

The most meaningful part of my job is… Getting the chance to meet members and coworkers. Also, I enjoy being able to build relationships or getting to know members and coworkers.

Favorite band: NPR and "Radio Lab."

The biggest lesson I’ve learned while working at the Y is… That my Y friends/family will step up and help me when I am in need!

jamie-living-our-causeName: Jamie Pocock

This is Jamie's first summer at the YMCA of Boulder Valley, and she has quickly become a strong leader of her department and a valuable, passionate part of our team. During the past couple of months, Jamie was been just a little busy: She helped the facilities staff take down the bubble over the Arapahoe pool and has been working to hire staff, train and organize in preparation for summer. This recognition is well deserved.

Pets: Jaeger (German Shorthaired Pointer)

How long have you worked for the Y? 6 months

I work for the Y because… I love working for a place that really is for ALL people. No matter your age, ability level, health or financial status, all are welcome. I love being a part of something that has a really special impact on the community.

Favorite Band: Ryan Adams

The most fun part about my job is… The water slides and diving boards! These are rare features in an aquatics facility these days, and seeing the joy on people’s faces when they get to use them here is awesome! It’s great that we can provide those opportunities to our members.

The most meaningful part of my job is… Giving both children and adults the opportunity to learn how to swim.  Equipping them with a lifesaving skill that can prevent drowning is the most important thing.

Favorite Sports Team: Buffalo Bills

The biggest lesson I’ve learned while working at the Y is… We have an amazingly generous community that is willing to do whatever necessary to ensure that the YMCA has excellent facilities and that all people feel welcome and included.
