Hunter & Marvin: Living Our Cause

Aug 26, 2015, 17:02 PM by

These two summer camp staffers — one from Sports Camp and the other from Adventure Camp — made a world of difference in the lives of our campers. They are truly living our cause by serving as mentors, guides, educators and friends (as well as safety monitors, of course). Thank you to Marvin and Hunter.

How long have you worked for the Y? I have worked for the Y for two summers (2013 and 2015).

I work for the Y because… The Y has given me an opportunity to rise up and be a leader/role model in my community. The Y has also introduced me to several individuals who have impacted my life in a positive way. I can’t think of another place where I can play sports with kids or paddle board with them and actually get paid to do it! It’s a no brainer!

The most fun part about my job is… Observing the campers interact and succeed. One of the most priceless moments of my summer was watching one of my favorite kids sing and dance to his favorite song (“Uptown Funk”) while cleaning up the cafeteria. While this kid is an incredible athlete, I do not see him act out or be silly very often. This moment shows there is more to a person than meets the eye.

The most meaningful part of my job is… Besides all of the silly moments, I have seen some amazing football, soccer, basketball and lacrosse players at sports camp and some white water paddle boarders achieving milestones every day. It is a priceless feeling to be involved in a child’s triumphant moment during camp; most of which a parent may never get to experience (unfortunately).

The biggest lesson I’ve learned while working at the Y is… Helping the community can be as simple as sharing a nice compliment to someone else. Out of all of my years working with youth camps, this summer was the most time I spent interacting with parents. There is nothing that makes a parent feel better than hearing about their child’s day and assuring them that their kid is a rock star at camp and we love having them around.

But truthfully, the YMCA community taught me this lesson by how I have been treated. Since I have started working here I have experienced many nice gestures that make me feel empowered. Thank you YMCA for the kindness and good times.
