Moss & Heather: Living Our Cause

May 4, 2016, 10:12 AM by

On the surface, Moss Butler and Heather Crow — this month's Living Our Cause award recipients — are very different. Moss is a sports coordinator and helps to oversee and support the hundreds of volunteers in the Y's youth sports programs. Heather is a Health & Fitness associate program director, focusing on nutrition. One is all about kids sports; the other is all about improving members' nutrition habits.

And yet, both of them have a radiating passion for helping people improve their lives. Both work diligently to provide their expertise to those in need. And both have a strong belief in the power of the Y. Learn more about them below:

How long have you worked for the Y? 7 years

I work for the Y because… I feel that the Y offers programs to everyone in the community and works to make the programs accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status or political/religious affiliation. I also feel that the Y upholds a recreational ethic (fun and development FIRST) in youth sports that can be harder and harder to find in our community today, and I’m honored to be a part of that.

The most fun part about my job is… Getting out on the courts/fields and teaching/coaching the kids’ sports programs. I learn a bunch myself, and also get to experience the thrill of being a kid again!

Hobbies include: Playing guitar, hiking, nature photography…

The most meaningful part of my job is… Working with kids, but also getting to help our coaches find themselves as leaders in the community.

My favorite fruit: Right now it’s MANGOS!

The biggest lesson I’ve learned while working at the Y is… There’s always something more to learn. I’ve also learned how to make use of my team, instead of thinking I have to do it all myself.

My favorite pets: Had to be the family dog, Hazel. She lived to be 16 years old, a little long-haired miniature dachshund with a pep in her step. She was always down to go for long walks, bark until I learned some patience and gobble up anything she could get her mouth on. A funny little beast!

My favorite band: Lots, from Carlos Nakai to Baka Beyond to KRS-One. Paper Bird too. Oh, and Bob/Ziggy Marley! And all the local bands. Keep it going!

My favorite movie: Recently, Will Smith’s “Concussion” and Will Ferrell’s “The Other Guys”.

I work for the Y because… I absolutely love what the Y stands for: inclusion, support, health and community!

My favorite sports team: Gryffindor Quidditch Team

The most fun part about my job is… Getting to work with such passionate people who want to make this world a better place.

My favorite color: Green, all shades.

The most meaningful part of my job is… Seeing people love themselves enough to make positive and healthy changes in their lives.

My favorite fruit: How can I choose?! They are all so yummy!

The biggest lesson I’ve learned while working at the Y is… Change is hard, but with encouragement and support, anything is possible!

My favorite pets: I am a total sucker for dogs!

My favorite hobbies include: Reading, traveling, cooking.
