In Her Own Words

How long have you volunteered for the Y? I have volunteered for the  Y for  seven months.

I support the Y by: I was a volunteer at Sanchez Elementary school in Layette last school year. I worked in and after school program. My role was to help the students in completing their homework assignments, in PE and with crafts and cooking classes. I worked as a teachers assistant and helped where I was needed. I worked 1-2 days every week.

I volunteer with the Y because: I am a member of the Y. I love the atmosphere there when I do classes and workout. Everyone is friendly and helpful. They have great instructors there.  I feel it is important to come together as a community to encourage a healthy lifestyles beginning in childhood.

Volunteering in general is important to me because… I am at a time in my life where I can commit a  few hours a week to help in an organization that closely reflects my vales of  youth development and social responsibility.

What’s your advice for people who are thinking about volunteering for the Y? It is a very rewarding experience to be part  of an organization whose mission is  promoting the healthy values of exercise, sport, teamwork and education not just in the younger generation but in all ages. If  you are thinking of volunteering, just do it.

What’s your favorite part of volunteering? I love meeting all the other wonderful volunteers and staff at the Y. I also love working with children and being a positive role model for them.

In Our Words

"Susan is a giver. Her small volunteer commitment at Sanchez led to a much bigger role bringing our healthy living  topics to life. She connects with the kids and makes a huge difference. She is always smiling, organized and ready for anything. We are so lucky to have her with us." — Jessica Adler Clay, Director of Talent Acquisition
