Meet The Volunteer of the Month

Name: Jon Webster

volunteer-ymca-jonathanHow long have you volunteered for the Y? I have volunteered for the Y, off and on, for a little over a year.

I support the Y by… Using my construction knowledge to offer professional expertise on building projects at YMCA Camp Santa Maria. The past two summers, I have helped on a number of projects, including a new outdoor sink, ga-ga pits and this year's Yurt Village.

I volunteer with the Y because… When I was a kid, I didn't have the opportunity to go to summer camp or participate in fun activities like the Y offers to kids. Volunteering and supporting the Y is a good way for me to make sure that all kids have opportunities to be kids, to have fun and to have access to the outdoors and nature. Plus, the Y staff, volunteers and board members are really appreciative, thoughtful and caring. They make it very easy to decide where to put my volunteer hours.

Volunteering in general is important to me because… It just feels good to give back. I'm a project manager for Porchfront Homes, and as a company, we make it a priority to give back. As an individual, I also like to do what I can to help those in need.

What’s your advice for people who are thinking about volunteering for the Y? Use your expertise. Everyone has special knowledge or skills. Use those to abilities to support the causes you care about. Do what you are good at.

What’s your favorite part of volunteering? Getting to work with the employees and the volunteers of the Y. It's always fun to get to work with people who appreciate what you are doing.

Why We Love Him

"Some Y projects just wouldn’t get done without our talented and dedicated volunteers. The Adventure Village project at Camp Santa Maria required engineering, carpentry, permitting and project management that would have blown the budget. But in stepped Jon Webster — our volunteer of the month. Jon has spent many days of his personal time helping to design and construct the platforms that are the base for our four new yurts. Through his drive, perseverance, sweat and hard work, we were able to expand a village for kids to have a truly rustic experience at camp. Jon makes it look easy, and he does it with his typical grace and good humor."—Jeff Clay, Chief Operating Officer of YMCA of Boulder Valley
