Brianna & Jake: Living Our Cause

Aug 2, 2016, 10:21 AM by

Our staff members get it. What's it?

Well, it's the thing that separates the Y from others. It's what makes us a cause... not just a business. It's the core values, the mission and the philosophy. It's the teamwork, sportsmanship, confidence and respect we work to instill in our young participants. It's knowing that this is more than a job: It's a unified effort to strengthen our community and the families within it.

Here are two staff members who get it:

How long have you worked for the Y? About 6 months.

I work for the Y because… I love working with kids and with the wonderful people that the Y attracts.

The most fun part about my job is… Getting to play! I get paid to plan fun activities, play games with kids and take them on new and exciting field trips.

The most meaningful part of my job is… Watching kids grow and become caring and responsible young people. It's something I’ve seen happen even in my few months here! I also love learning new approaches, activities and lessons from my awesome Y School Age Program coworkers.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned while working at the Y is… Internalizing the Y core values: respect, honesty, caring and responsibility.

My pets: My new 5-month-old puppy, Frankie.

My favorite hobbies include: Singing, politics and reading.

How long have you worked for the Y? A little over a year.

My favorite I would love to travel to: Greece.

I work for the Y because… I love kids! There isn’t anything I would rather be doing than to be working with kids. They inspire me everyday to become a better person and to work hard at what I do.

My favorite holiday: Christmas.

The most fun part about my job is… I love the babies! They are just so cute, and I love seeing how much they grow and learn in such a short time. Working here for over a year I have seen some of the little ones learn how to crawl and then walk, and it’s pretty amazing.

My favorite way to relax: With a good snack and movie.

The most meaningful part of my job is… I enjoy when the kiddos come running into Child Watch yelling out each staff member’s name because they are so excited to hang out and play with us. It’s also meaningful when parents express how thankful they are for what we do and how we can help them to get those few hours of “mommy or daddy time” in the day.

My favorite movie: Selena and Love & Basketball.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned while working at the Y is… That we all have different stories, we all come from different places but the Y is ALL about family, making everyone feel welcome and having a place for everyone to call their own.

My favorite hobbies include: Spending time with family, friends, playing basketball, shopping.
