Meet the Volunteer of the Month

Name: Annamarie Burtness

How long have you volunteered for the Y? I began volunteering for the YMCA in1962 in Wilmington, Delaware. I initiated a program of water play for disabled children.

I support the Y by… At the Arapahoe and Mapleton locations, the Safety Around Water Programs are excellent. It is a privilege to work with Jamie, the Sr. Aquatics Director, and to see the children grow in the excitement of learning water skills. Being part of that program is one of the highlights of my day.

I volunteer with the Y because… This is an organization with values, steeped in tradition and yet it is innovative. The Active Older  Adults Program is past the birthing stage. You can go on Nordic walks, you can listen to talks, you can help in the pool, you can knit caps for schools. All that and more with the added participation in SilverSneakers.

Volunteering in general is important to me because… Volunteering is a way to stimulate self-improvement for others and yourself. You are never too old to donate of your time and talent. You will meet and work with people who love sharing and will help you share and grow.

What’s your advice for people who are thinking about volunteering for the Y? If you are looking for a place to give of your gifts… Jump in.

Why We Love Her

"Annamarie’s smile and energy are contagious. She is willing to assist in any area of our Y, ready to roll up her sleeves and jump right in. She’s been an instrumental part of our Safety Around Water volunteer program. We are lucky to know her and even luckier to know we can count on her as a terrific volunteer. Thank you, Annamarie."—Jessica Adler Clay, Director of Talent Acquisition
