Volunteer of the Month: You!

Sep 6, 2016, 11:12 AM by

You have been named the YMCA of Boulder Valley Volunteer of the Month. Congrats! You deserve it. We couldn't have supported our community without your hard work and …

"Wait a second," you interrupt with a harrumph. "I don't even volunteer for the Y!"

"OK, you caught us," we admit, blushing. "But just listen to what we have to say."

The goal of honoring you with such a hefty, lauded distinction is about letting you realize your potential. You have the skill, talent, compassion and caring to make a difference at an organization that sets out to strengthen community, provide kids with safe, fun and enriching care, give seniors social and wellness opportunities, and offer families a sanctuary, a community and a support system. You can — and should — be a part of that.

You can have an impact in the lives of many while also making a difference in your own life. Research shows that volunteering can lead to better health; older volunteers likely see physical and mental health benefits from volunteer experiences. Most people who volunteer report that it simply makes them feel good. It's not about sacrifice; it's about helping others so you can feel good about doing something selfless, doing something bigger than yourself. It's about challenging yourself with a new experience: hold babies, read to kids, help a 5th grader with his science homework, welcome seniors at our front desk or coach a group of young athletes to their first victory.

Learn about accountability to prepare yourself for your first job, or keep yourself active and engaged after a long and successful career. Build community, make friends and form connections with like-minded individuals (we are really fun!).

Plus, we need you. Your community needs you.

So, yes, we are honoring the soul-touching, heart-lifting, life-impacting potential of you. Now it's time to put that potential into action. Volunteer today. The Y is seeking volunteers in after-school programs, Child Watch, member services and youth sports. Email Jessica.Clay@ymcabv.org to show us your potential. Or visit our volunteer page on the website.
