volunteer-month-ymca-danMeet the Volunteer of the Month

Name: Dan Ryan

How long have you volunteered for the Y? This is my second year volunteering with the Y.

I support the Y by: I volunteer as a soccer coach for the youth teams (U5 and U7).

I volunteer with the Y because… It is a way for me to give back to the community and allow kids to have the same experiences that I had when I was young. Many of my best memories from growing up are the times I spent playing soccer and other sports with my friends. As an adult, I now realize that all of those good times were due in large part to the efforts of coaches and volunteers. Being a volunteer coach is my way of thanking them by paying it forward to the next generation. Plus, nothing is more enjoyable to me than watching my daughters and other kids have fun.

Volunteering in general is important to me because… It is a way for me to give back to the community. Anything that we can do to provide our kids with opportunities to have fun, discover new interests and develop skills benefits our entire community. I was lucky enough to have positive role models in my life, and I hope to fill this role for my own daughters and the kids I coach.

What’s your advice for people who are thinking about volunteering for the Y? Go for it! The YMCA is a great organization to be part of, and volunteering will give you the opportunity to make a positive impact on our kids and our community. Helping kids have positive, fun experiences will be the highlight of your day.

What’s your favorite part of volunteering? My favorite part of volunteering is seeing kids have fun. There is absolutely nothing better than that. Coaching my current U7 girls team is the absolute highlight of my week.

Why We Love Him

"I remember Daniel Ryan showing up for soccer season last fall (2015). His daughter was in the U6 age group, and we were really looking for coaches to jump in and volunteer to coach her team. When he saw that the team was in need of a coach, he happily stepped up. He steadily dealt well with 'first day' chaos, calmly taking the group of 5-year-olds under his wing and showing them soccer drills in the small green space on the north side of the Mapleton YMCA. Since then he’s continued to volunteer for us, now coaching his daughter’s team in our U7 girls Boulder Valley Youth Soccer league. He’s always been very flexible as soccer scheduling has shifted around from time to time and has made our jobs much easier in the office. Knowing that we have someone like Dan out on the fields, someone who understands the YMCA mission, is awesome. Thank you, Dan!!" — Moss Butler, Associate Program Director of Sports
