Meet the Volunteer of the Month

Irene Smith

How long have you volunteered for the Y? I’ve been volunteering at the Y for six weeks now.

I support the Y by: I’m a Health and Fitness Intern at the Y. I’m helping the fitness department with data collection and analysis, planning and implementing a wellness campaign/workshop, and evaluating classes. I’m also involved with the MEND program, Diabetes Prevention Program and the Y Nutrition Program.

I volunteer with the Y because: I’ve enjoyed my membership at the Y for the past 2 years. I feel like it’s a great place for me to apply what I’ve learned about public health and have that opportunity to connect to the community. I chose to do my internship at the Y because aside from the fact that it’s so close to where I live, I’m genuinely interested in the variety of programs it offers and I know that my children will be in good hands while I work.

Volunteering in general is important to me because… As Ghandi said, “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”. Being a volunteer keeps me grounded and reminds me to be grateful for the things I have. Offering my skills, knowledge, and time is the least I can do to show gratitude and to give back to the community.

What’s your advice for people who are thinking about volunteering for the Y? I say do it! The Y offers so many programs for everyone. I’m sure that there will be something here that will peak your interest.

What’s your favorite part of volunteering? Volunteering at the Y actually inspires me. Coming to work and seeing all these wonderful people make healthy choices is very motivating. It encourages me to prioritize my health as well, and that’s my favorite part.
