How long have you volunteered for the Y? I joined the Board of Directors in 1994. During my tenure, the YMCA expanded its mission to include building community and the Arapahoe Y was built.

I support the Y by: Currently, I am chairing the Active Older Adults committee. As I age, I am piqued by people like me who no longer follow their passions or interests. They feel old. And then I meet someone at the Y who is in their 90s who drives themselves to exercise classes a couple of times a week and are inspiring.

I volunteer with the Y because: My volunteering at the Y began because of equal opportunity. When my daughter was in elementary school, we enrolled her in the basketball program. She didn’t have any skills but she got to play an equal amount of time as the other girls on the team. That made a huge impression on me.

Volunteering in general is important to me because: I want others to have opportunities that I have. I want others to grow and develop to their best.

What’s your advice for people who are thinking about volunteering for the Y? Just do it! Begin with an activity or event. If you enjoyed it, then commit to a longer-term activity. But when you commit, follow through. The Y depends on you.

What’s your favorite part of volunteering? My favorite part of volunteering is inclusion. It is really important to me that everyone who participates in a class or activity feels welcome. That they never go away without someone having reached out to them.
