Get To Know Our Volunteer of the Month

Name: Brissa Childers

How long have you volunteered for the Y? Since February 2016. The first time I ever volunteered was at the Longmont Y as a young teenager.

I support the Y by: I have had the opportunity to support the Y as an HR Management Intern. Communicating and connecting the Y with outside resources in order to welcome new volunteers, interns and work-study students to the Y. It’s awesome to know that the Y has a place for experienced and beginner volunteers.

I volunteer with the Y because: I volunteer with the Y because making a positive difference in people’s lives is prosperous. When I have earned my white hair and wrinkles, I want to look back and know my work brought joy and life-changing experiences to others’ well-being. I learned that the Y is a place where those chances happen and that is why I volunteer at the Y.

Volunteering in general is important to me because: Volunteering in general is important to me because it keeps me humble and reminds me to look at the smallest of things in a different perspective.

What’s your advice for people who are thinking about volunteering for the Y? Don’t think about it so much, just do it! The very first time I ever volunteered at the Y as a teen, bottom line was that I was not getting paid. Then something unexpected happened to me: I was super happy talking with the people around me and actually having fun.

What’s your favorite part of volunteering? My favorite part of volunteering is that while I am having fun with the people I get to meet, there is actually something much bigger going on. People’s lives are better because of one’s choice to volunteer their time. It’s funny how volunteering gives one that magical feeling that I can’t quite put my finger on. It just feels good.
