Volunteer of the Month: Erica Holwick

Name: Erica Holwick

How long have you volunteered for the Y? 6 months. From September to present with a small break in between.

I support the Y by: Coaching youth volleyball on Sundays.

I volunteer with the Y because: I like giving back to the community. I used to work with kids at summer camps and missed the interaction and helping kids grow and learn.

Volunteering in general is important to me because: It's important that kids have role models outside their parents, and sports are a great way to accomplish that. It sounds cheesy, but they are the future of the world, and it's good to be a part of shaping their future.

What’s your advice for people who are thinking about volunteering for the Y? It's really rewarding to watch a kid take what you've taught them and apply it. Time commitments might scare you, but it's really not a ton of time if you don't want it to be. The value to a kid could be immeasurable.

What’s your favorite part of volunteering? For me, it's teaching a kid a skill and helping them understand it and watching them try to put it into practice. Over the course of the weeks, they continually get better using the methods you taught them.

Volunteer Impact

"Erica has been such a huge asset to our YMCA Jr. Buffs Volleyball program. The program is for girls in the 3rd-8th grade range, and Erica has consistently and steadily given of her time and talents to assist our lead coach in teaching the girls the fundamentals. She is energized, organized and always on time to volleyball meetings. She goes above and beyond, selflessly serving the community through her commitment to youth development through volleyball. We are so grateful to have Erica as a part of the program, and appreciate her dedication to the Y Way to Play."—Moss Butler, Associate Program Director of Sports
