Volunteer of the Month: Dave Sheanin

Name: Dave Sheanin

How long have you volunteered for the Y? Since 2010

I support the Y by: Family membership, Former two-term Board Member (Board Development Chair), and Co-Founder of the Strong Kids Triathlon

Dave Sheanin at the Tri

I volunteer with the Y because:
The Y provides so many opportunities for folks in our community—it feels right to give back.  The Strong Kids Triathlon filled a gap that opened in 2010 and I found passionate partners in Dick Summerfield and Wade Arnold (board members at the time) together to create something fun and unique.  The Y was (and is) perfectly positioned for this event and I love seeing all of the kids being active and going hard on race day!

Volunteering in general is important to me because: I suppose the “right” answer here is to say that it’s important to give back to my community as I noted in the previous question.  While this is true, of course, volunteering also makes me feel good about myself—I get a lot out of helping others and I feel lucky to have the time and treasure to be able to share.

What’s your advice for people who are thinking about volunteering for the Y? There are lots of opportunities to volunteer at the Y but if you have some specific idea or talent that’s not already being offered or actively sought, make a proposal!

What’s your favorite part of volunteering? Watching the youngest kids (and their parents) during the Strong Kids Tri.  Words can’t possibly explain it—you really have to witness it for yourself!  It’s my favorite day of the year by far.
