johnstown-yComing in 2020

Together, we are building a stronger future.

Coming in 2020, the Johnstown Community YMCA will offer life-changing fitness and wellness programs, touchdown dance-inspiring sports programs and giggle-inducing camps and youth programs. Let’s not forget the new preschool and early childhood education offerings, swimming pools and aquatics programs, and endless amounts of fun.

It’s official: The Y is coming to Johnstown, Colo.

The Johnstown Community YMCA will be a whopping 55,000- to 65,000-square-foot fitness center, community center and recreation center — a hub of activity and connection for all ages.

Pretty cool, right? We think so. So how did we all get so lucky?

In June of 2017, YMCA of Northern Colorado administrators and town leaders signed a memorandum of understanding for the management of the center. In spring of 2018, Johnstown town council selected Johnstown Community YMCA as its official name. The two entities are now working with the architects, Denver’s Perkins+Will, to plan and design the facility.

“This is an incredible opportunity for our organization to strengthen more communities, to support more families, to provide more social opportunities for seniors and to help more children thrive,” says Chris Coker, YMCA of Northern Colorado President and CEO. “We are honored to take this journey with the town of Johnstown, and we look forward to serving as a community hub for its residents.”

When will the Johnstown Community YMCA open?

We expect the Johnstown Community YMCA to open in spring of 2020. As with any construction, things can change. Follow us on Facebook to stay up to date.

Where will the facility be located?

The Johnstown Community YMCA will be located just east of town hall in Johnstown.

When can we sign up for preschool?

Pre-registration lottery is now open for full-time, full-day. The preschool will provide early childhood education, active play and character-focused programming for children ages 2.5 to 6.

What will the hours of operation be?

Hours of operation have not yet been solidified for the Johnstown Community YMCA, and we will ask for community feedback to help us determine the need. The hours of operation at other Northern Colorado Ys — Lafayette, Boulder and Longmont — are 5am-10pm on weekdays and reduced hours on weekends. We will most likely mirror those hours.

When will you begin hiring and what sort of positions will you be filling?

We will hire for summer camp staff in spring 2019. We will begin to hire for the facility several months prior to opening to allow for training, likely in mid to late 2019. There will be many employment opportunities — from preschool teachers and childcare staff to trainers and fitness instructors to lifeguards and membership staff.

Will you have lap swimming?

Our extensive aquatics facilities will be utilized for lap swimming, swim lessons, family recreation, swim team and much more. Trust us, it’s gonna be a water wonderland.

How much will a membership cost?

Those details are being figured out, and we will post that information as soon as we know it. One thing to note: The Y has nationwide membership, which means you can visit other Ys in our association (Longmont, Lafayette and Boulder), all Colorado Ys (Denver Metro, Colorado Springs, Pueblo) and 98 percent of all Ys across the country. We will offer a variety of membership types for individuals, couples and families as well as corporate memberships, military memberships and SilverSneakers and Silver&Fit memberships. Members receive discounts on YMCA programs, including summer camp, swim lessons and youth sports.

The YMCA also provides financial assistance to those who qualify. Funds raised by the Y ensure all children, families, individuals and seniors have access to preschool, swim lessons, youth sports and wellness opportunities. At the Y, no child is turned away because of an inability to pay.
