Lifeguarding (Blended Learning Course)

This course provides entry-level participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS arrive and take over. Must bring swim suit, towel and course materials as well as attend every class to pass course. Successful completion of the course will result in certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR/AED and First Aid. Certifications last two years. Students MUST complete the online portion prior to class and show their instructor their online completion certification at the beginning of the course to continue. For ages 15+.

Prerequisites: 300-yard swim, retrieve a 10-pound brick from 9 feet of water and tread water for two minutes with no hands.

Classes held throughout the year at the Ys in Boulder, Lafayette, Longmont and Johnstown.

Shallow Water Lifeguarding (Blended Learning Course)

This American Red Cross course provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in shallow water up to 5 feet and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. Upon successful completion of the class, participants will receive an American Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED certificate that is valid for 2 years. Students MUST complete the online portion prior to class and show their instructor their online completion certification at the beginning of the course to continue. For ages 15+.

Prerequisites: Swim 100 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing, tread water for 2 minutes and complete a timed event within 50 seconds.

Lifeguard Recertification (Blended Learning Course)

Recertification courses are also available for currently certified Lifeguards. Certifications last two years.

Lifeguard Instructor Training (Blended Learning Course)

This American Red Cross course trains instructor candidates to teach the basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course, Blended Learning Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Aquatic Attraction Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuers and Bloodborne Pathogens Training. Upon successful completion of the class, participants will receive an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certificate that is valid for 2 years.

Note: To teach Waterfront Skills Lifeguarding, instructors must possess a basic-level Waterfront Skills certificate.

Prerequisites:

  • Must be at least 17 years by the end of class
  • Possess a current basic-level certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Successfully complete the online Introduction to the Lifeguarding Instructor Course prior to the pre-course skills session.
  • Obtain all instructor and participant materials before entering the first session of the instructor course.
