Finding ways to stay active as a family isn’t always easy, especially when everyone has different interests, abilities and energy levels. But staying healthy together matters. Shared physical activity not only promotes long-term wellness but also creates time for bonding, building confidence and having fun as a family.

At the Y, we offer welcoming programs for families of all shapes, sizes and stages. Our programs are designed to get everyone moving from toddlers to teens to grandparents. Here are five great ways to stay active together at the Y.

1. Stretch Together with Yoga

Looking for a calm, connected way to get moving? Yoga is a great choice. Our yoga classes blend simple poses, breathing techniques and playful interaction creating a space where kids and adults can stretch, balance and unwind side by side.

In addition to improving flexibility and coordination, yoga promotes mindfulness and stress relief, all while spending intentional time together. No prior yoga experience needed, just bring a mat and a willingness to have fun.

2. Make a Splash with Family Swim Time

There’s nothing like hanging out at the pool to bring the whole crew together. Whether it’s open swim, a splash in the shallow end or some relaxed laps, our aquatics spaces are built for families.

We also offer swim lessons for every age and ability—from preschoolers learning to float to teens fine-tuning their strokes. Plus, water play encourages coordination, water safety and pure joy.

Explore swim times and lessons on our Aquatics Page.

3. Move Together

While most little ones are not ready to do squats or bench press, many kids and teens can join you for mellow workouts at the Y. Jog around the track, do a daily plank challenge and then shoot some hoops in the gym. Maybe there’s even a game of pickleball in your family’s future.

A great place to start is with the Youth Smart Start program, which introduces youth ages 8-14 years to the equipment and rules at the Y. This helps them get prepared for using treadmills, bikes and strength training equipment.

4. Enjoy Special Events and Family Nights

Throughout the year, the Y hosts a variety of fun, often free events designed to bring families together. From themed Family Nights and seasonal crafts to holiday celebrations and outdoor movie nights, the Y offers something for everyone to enjoy.

These gatherings aren’t just about activity, they're about community. Whether you’re playing bingo, carving pumpkins or dancing at a winter party, you’re connecting with other families in a safe, welcoming space.

Check the Events Calendar for upcoming fun.

5. Play, Learn and Grow with Youth Sports and Activities

Our youth programs offer something for every interest from soccer, basketball and volleyball to STEM camps, kid’s night out and volunteer opportunities. Kids stay active, learn new skills and have fun doing it.

Better yet, parents can be part of the action cheering from the sidelines, volunteering as a coach or helping with events. It’s a true family affair, built around positive play and teamwork.

Healthy families are strong families and at the YMCA, we’re here to support every step, skip, splash and stretch along the way. With inclusive programs for all ages and abilities, the Y makes it easier (and way more fun) to be active together.
