What Is Pilates?
Pilates was developed in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates as a method of physical and mental conditioning. It focuses on a few core principles: controlled movement, breathwork, proper alignment, concentration and flow.
Pilates is often compared to yoga. While both emphasize breath and control, Pilates uses specialized equipment and has a stronger focus on core engagement and repetitive movements. It’s a practice that stimulates mindfulness and targets muscle groups in a low-impact way.
Why Pilates? The Benefits:
Core Strength: If you've heard that Pilates is great for your core, you’ve heard correctly. Every movement stems from your center, helping to build strength that supports your entire body.
Flexibility: Think gentle, controlled stretching. Pilates helps lengthen muscles and increase your range of motion over time, making daily movement easier and more fluid.
Low-Impact: It’s joint-friendly and adaptable for all ages, making it ideal for those with joint pain, arthritis or just starting a fitness journey.
Mind-Body Connection: Pilates asks you to move with intention. That mindfulness doesn’t just boost your results, it also helps reduce stress and improve your focus.
Recovery Support: Many people turn to Pilates during injury recovery because it builds strength without strain. It’s also a great complement to physical therapy.
