Option 1: Naturalist Outdoor Adventure Camp

6 days, 5 nights (2-3 nights in the backcountry)

Session 1 (June 4-9), Session 3 (June 18-23), Session 7 (July 16-21), Session 9 (July 30-August 4)

Are you ready to refine your teamworking skills, grow your current outdoor abilities and get comfortable with pushing your comfort zone? Are you ready to become a stronger advocate for your environment, your friends and yourself? Are you ready to ditch the cabin and get familiar with tent life? Naturalist Outdoor Adventure Camp focuses on technical hiking, backpacking, camping and survival skills on moderate to challenging terrain with guidance from Leave No Trace principles. Campers will become very familiar with the backcountry trail system of varying levels of difficulty at YMCA Camp Santa Maria and will stay at multiple campsites—from an aspen grove with a pristine view of sunsets to a large open cave around 10,000 feet in elevation. They will develop their skillsets in orienteering, backpacking preparation, creative backcountry cooking, water filtration, wildlife safety, shelter building and knot-tying. Camping gear, such as overnight packs and sleeping pads, will be supplied.

Option 2: Mountaineering Outdoor Adventure Camp

6 days, 5 nights (2-3 nights in the backcountry)

Session 2 (June 11-16), Session 4 (June 25 - 30), Session 6 (July 9-14), Session 8 (July 23-28)

If you are ready to elevate your mountaineering skills, this camp will take you to new heights. Literally. Mountaineering Outdoor Adventure Camp is aimed at developing critical skills for campers with an interest in rock climbing in addition to hiking and backcountry camping. Campers can expect to hike up and camp out in sites near a crag with five to six routes of varying difficulty, spending some of their time building on their backpacking and hiking skills and then building on their technical climbing and belay skills as a team. Learn how to safely and creatively cook in the backcountry, travel safely across various terrain, understand Leave No Trace principles, respect and travel safely around wildlife, and build primitive shelters. If you are eager to refine your teamworking skills, grow your current outdoor abilities and get comfortable with expanding your comfort zone, Mountaineering Outdoor Adventure Camp will give you the tools, mentors, and experiences to become a stronger advocate for your environment, your friends and yourself. Campers will be supplied with high-quality climbing and backpacking gear.
